Remember I’m a Plant
You buy flowers and plants because they are pretty.
You take them inside.
Place them on a windowsill.
You look at them for a few days, and then forget they exist.
They wilt.
Only the stems left poking from the dirt.
Dead leaves and petals scattered on the floor.
“Ugh.”
You bought the plants for their beauty.
You forgot to see them as plants.
Plants need water.
Plants need pruning.
Plants need light.
To care for a plant, you must stop.
Touch dirt.
Be present.
Reflect.
But as you give a plant life, it gives you life back.
I write this poem in sadness.
In bitterness.
In confusion.
Because you always let your plants die.
Xoxo,
Ally Jayne

I’m genuinely in love with this poem (partially because I love plant imagery haha). I love when writing can be so simple yet carry so much weight! Now I’m thinking about my own history with plants (both literal and figurative)
